How I Painted Colorful Abstract Fox

One of the special things about being an artist is that we can create something that isn’t found in real life. We can bring magic and imagination to others through our art.

I like to paint realistically but also want to bring something unique to my realistic art, something abstract.

This painting was experimental for me. I used three different types of paint on a gessobord.  For this first layer I’m using high flow acrylics from Golden. All supplies for this painting can be found in the description box of the video above.

These high flow acrylics are hard to control which I like, you can get some really pretty and cool affects. They remind me a lot like watercolor.

After the first layer completely dried, I drew on the fox with graphite. A scale tool and ruler were really helpful with this. I recently bought a scale tool and it’s been a game changer for drawing correct proportions.

I also used a china marker to fill in some darker areas and a gold Posca marker to add some fun marks.

Once I was done drawing, I sprayed an adhesive over the drawing so it doesn’t get messed up when I apply paint.

This second layer of paint I used heavy body acrylics from Golden. To be honest I don’t like acrylics very much. So this layer gave me some trouble. I didn’t use acrylics as much in this layer as I was planning to.

This next layer of paint I used oils, and this is where the painting truly came to life. I’m trying to loosen up my style and add more color to my art, not too much color though, just enough to give it more magic. I used galkyd gel as a medium and gamblin oil paints.

I was scared this wouldn’t turn out, but I’m quite happy with it. I don’t like the art I create much these days, but this painting I am happy with and it was fun to paint.

Have you ever used acrylics and oils in the same painting? I’d like to experiment more with this!
