5 Crazy MYTHS About Being An Artist Today
The only way to make money as an artist is to get into fancy galleries or have high-end collectors.
Most people believe that being an artist you’re either dirt poor or rich, but there is a middle ground! Especially in today’s age with social media, making a living as an artist is possible just like any other business.
You don’t need to get into that fancy gallery in NYC or be the next Ashley Longshore. With online platforms or traditional ways like art fairs or galleries, it’s possible! You just have to be willing to put in the work, even when you have yet to see results or make a dime.
You need to be depressed or go through trauma to make good art.
I’ve heard this before and was shocked that some believe this! Now, I do believe that hard times can bring out some of our best art, but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessary to make good art.
You can make good art no matter where you are, what you’re doing, or how you feel.
Once you find your art “style”, you have to stick to it.
It’s okay to try new things with your art! And actually, it’s a good thing to do this every once in a while, even when you have a steady art style.
Don’t feel like you always have to paint the same subjects or use the same medium or paint with the same colors. Try something new! This will not only help refine your art style, but also help you grow even more as an artist.
It’s important to remember that our art style should continue to evolve and change. This is a good thing.
Being an artist isn’t a real career or business.
I feel like many people believe this because when they think of art they think of it as a hobby. They think that us who have an art career, we’re just painting all day and that’s all we do.
As you probably know, this is NOT the case at all. In fact, I spend only a third of my working time making art.
Having an art career is just like any other career or business! Yeah we make art, but we also make or do: marketing, bookkeeping, product and content research, content for social media or our blog/channel, affiliate marketing, brand deals, fairs and markets, engage with our audience, create new products from our art, and I can go on...
You have to have natural talent to be an artist.
This is so not true! Creating art is just like any other acquired skill. You just have to make the time to practice. Every artist started out with scribbles or stick figures! No one came out of their mother’s womb making masterpieces. Every artist has a day one.
