5 Simple Ways to Improve Your Artist Life
Stop worrying what other artists are doing
I talked about this in the last newsletter, so I won’t go too in depth about it. But when you stop worrying about what other artists are doing, you’ll give yourself fewer chances to compare.
You’ll be happier and more focused on your own art.
You’ll no longer feel like you or your art isn’t good enough! It’s very freeing.
Replace social media time with creating time
This somewhat goes hand in hand with the first point. When you spend less time on social media, you’ll find yourself comparing less and worrying less what others are doing.
You’ll also find that you have more creating time! You’ll be able to create more art and FASTER too because you won’t be as distracted.
Instead of spending 30 minutes on Instagram, put your phone away and on SILENT. Then sit down and create some art.
Doing this will bring you more happiness! I don’t know about you, but being on social media for a long time does not bring me happiness. Creating however, truly does.
Join an artist community
The time that we are in is ROUGH. We need community, an artist community - even if it’s online.
Connecting with other artists and starting friendships is powerful. You can encourage one another, help each other, and feel not as alone.
Besides Instagram, there are some other ways to find an artist community.
One way is by attending one of my live tutorials I do every Friday at 10am. Even if you don’t paint along, you can chat with other artists in the chatbox. And you don’t just have to attend my lives, but find other artists who do lives and attend those too!
Another way is joining artist Facebook groups. You can get on Facebook and search for artist groups. There could even be artist groups that are local to you.
My friend Des and I made a Facebook group for nature artists that you’re welcome to join. I haven’t been active on Facebook for a while now, so it’s more of Des’s group, haha. But I invite you to join!
You can also join a paid membership community! An example is Patreon. There are many artists who have Patreon that you can support them and also be a part of a small-knit community.
Somewhat like Patreon, Nature with Watercolor is my membership community for nature-inspired watercolor artists! It’s currently closed, but will open again next month for those who are on the waitlist. If you’d like to be notified when it opens, click here!
Give your creating space a fresh look
It’s amazing what a little changing-up your space can do for your inspiration and creativity. If you’ve been feeling down or uninspired, try rearranging your art space.
Hang up some of your newer works or art that inspires you. Change up how you organize your art supplies. Bring nature into your space with a new houseplant or vase of flowers.
You’ll feel more inspired, motivated, and happier!
Celebrate each artwork you create, even the “bad” ones
Creating art takes courage, and that should be celebrated.
Do you know how many people there are who WANT to create art, but they just don’t. They’re scared, they don’t have supplies, they can’t find the time to learn, etc?
But you actually creating a work of art..that’s AMAZING. Your art is a gift.
Even if you aren’t proud of it, it’s a gift and you should celebrate that.
Even just the act of creating itself should be celebrated!
It’s special that we can create something that once was nothing, and give that nothing...LIFE.
Which one of these will you try?
